Adult Programs

The library offers a variety of programs for adults and young adults grades 7 and up. You may register online through the calendar, in person at the Ask Us Desk, or by calling 630/887-8760 ext. 239.

junctioncolorwebThis year, we are going beyond books and reading and encouraging people to expand their horizons by attending programs. Join us at the Junction—IPPL Junction!—to learn something new, create from scratch, and share your knowledge with your neighbors. IPPL card-holders who participate in designated Junction programs will earn entries into our monthly and grand prize drawings, donated by the Friends of IPPL.

    Film historian Steven Frenzel shares secrets and behind-the-scenes trivia and film clips from these 1939 movies and 1940 Academy Award best picture nominees.

    A fun-filled, down-to-earth look at the art form of opera. Lyric Opera educator Carla Thorpe discusses the history of opera as soprano Celeste Martino performs a selection of arias to help tell the story.

    Darien native and country singer/songwriter Andrew Salgado has come a long way since performing for his family at the tender age of five. In October of last year he won the first ever Pepsi Southern Original competition beating out over 7,000 bands and artists. Since then he has opened for and performed with Darryl Worley, Eli Young Band, Toby Keith, Lee DeWyze, Clint Black, and Carrie Underwood. He recently released two singles: "Dance On" and "Love Will Always Find a Way." Andrew is an electric performer onstage, and your toes will be tapping during the show.     The second decade of the 20th century was tumultuous both in history (1914 marked the start of World War I) and also in art history. Artists in France, Italy, and Germany competed for leadership in the modernist art movement. Picasso, Kandinsky, Duchamp, Boccioni, and others established the dominant paths their successors would follow for a century. Learn about this exciting art historical period from art historian Jeff Mishur.

    Fresh pasta made at home is something very special. You'll be amazed at how easy it is to make basic egg dough pasta using simple fresh ingredients. In this hands-on-class, Chef Mary Gail Bennett will help you to make homemade pasta and a delicious sauce to top it all off! Must be an Indian Prairie cardholder to register for this event.     The "Cape Cod of the Midwest" charms visitors with its 300 miles of coastline, state parks, orchards, and artists colonies. In this slide lecture, we'll explore the wonders of Door County in the fall. We'll tour historic lighthouses, discover picturesque communities, and sample a few of the outdoor recreational opportunities enjoyed by visitors.

    Historian Jim Gibbons will take you through one of the most catastrophic wars in our nation's history. He'll highlight significant events that thrust the United States into the war, including the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand, the sinking of the Lusitania, and also explain how this war paved the way for World War II.

    Floral designer Bridget Bittman returns with a hands-on workshop to create a bountiful harvest design with fresh flowers, fruit, berries, and natural elements such as feathers, leaves, and dried pods. Participants will make and take home a colorful floral arrangement fit for a Thanksgiving dinner or hostess gift. Bring a floral/garden clipper or scissors and a small box to transport your design. $20 supply fee payable at in-person registration.
